About us

The Research Center Weihenstephan for Brewing and Food Quality (BLQ) is a core institute of the Technical University of Munich.

It acts as an interface between science and practice with the aim of supporting the brewing and beverage industry and their suppliers from a technical, technological and economic perspective, utilizing current scientific findings and practical experience.

It is a modern research and service company within the TUM, and it also secures research contracts. It is involved in teaching and therefore acts as a key link between research, teaching, and practice.

As a state-owned, independent unit within the university, the testing labs are accredited in accordance with DIN EN ISO 17025 to perform chemical, chemical technology, and microbiological analysis.

In addition to state-of-the-art raw material, excipient and product analysis and feedstuff tests, the Research Center also provides technological and microbiological consultation.

Its own “Hygienic Design” Test Center is a global leader in testing fittings and system components.

Close collaboration with the following eight departments:

  • Research and Development
  • Chemical Technology Analysis
  • Microbiology Analytics
  • Instrumental Analytics
  • Food Safety
  • Yeast Center
  • Hygienic Design
  • Business Consultancy

ensures synergies in all matters.

A complete pilot brewery (including keg and bottle filling) enables test runs of any variety. This makes it possible to manufacture the most diverse beers in compliance with the German Purity Law or outside this specification, along with a multitude of other beverages and liquid products. The fermentation organisms used are provided by the strain bank of the institute's own Yeast Center. As a result, the institute can provide individual, impartial consultation on formulation and method development.

Analysis packages such as the “Beer carousel” or the “Wort boiling system evaluation” and the “Turbidity stability predictor” are rigorous, statistically validated aids for companies.

The service package is completed with an extensive range of further training courses and seminars.
